Residential Engineering

Our team provides high-quality engineering design services for new homes, apartment developments, and additions.

We specialise in residential structural and civil engineering design services and support our clients throughout the construction phases. As a guide, residential slab and footing design starts from $950, and a structural inspection and report starts from $1,200. Final fees depend on the project, and a written fee proposal is provided before work begins.

We provide engineering design services throughout New South Wales, including Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Taree, Forster, Nambucca Heads, Coffs Harbour and the Newcastle/Hunter region.

We are happy to provide a no-obligation quote for any residential project, including houses, units, or additions, that requires Structural and Civil Engineering.

Residential Engineering FAQ's

What is a Waffle Pod slab?

A waffle pod slab is a type of concrete slab used in construction, particularly for residential buildings. It is designed to provide a strong foundation while using less concrete than traditional methods. Here’s a basic outline of its components and construction process:

1. Polystyrene Pods: These are large, lightweight blocks made of expanded polystyrene (EPS). They are placed on the ground in a grid pattern.

2. Steel Reinforcement: Steel mesh or rebar is laid over the pods to provide additional strength to the slab.

3. Concrete Pouring: Concrete is poured over the entire setup, filling the gaps between the pods and covering the reinforcement mesh.

Advantages

- Insulation: The polystyrene pods provide excellent thermal insulation.
- Cost-Effective: Uses less concrete compared to traditional slabs, reducing costs.
- Lightweight: The overall weight of the slab is lighter, which can be beneficial in certain soil conditions.
Faster Construction: The method can speed up the construction process.

Disadvantages

- Polystyrene Waste: Disposal of polystyrene pods can be an environmental concern.
- Not Suitable for All Sites: Requires relatively flat and stable soil conditions.

In summary, a waffle pod slab is an efficient, cost-effective method for constructing stable and insulated foundations, especially for residential buildings.

Do you do engineering for retaining walls?

Yes. Please see our retaining wall section

Do you provide structural design of concrete pools?

Yes. We design sprayed concrete and reinforced blockwork pools.

Can you assist with the stormwater design?

Yes. We can design the pipe and pit, infiltration and stormwater detention systems.

What are the most common types of slab construction.

1. Waffle Pod Slab: This type of slab uses polystyrene pods to create a grid of voids within the concrete slab. It is popular for its cost-effectiveness and insulation properties. The site is generally cut flat with no excavation for beams.

2. Raft Slab or Slab-on-Ground (Conventional Slab): This is a reinforced concrete slab that sits on the ground and is supported by beams within the slab itself. This involves excavation of the beams into the ground.

3. Strip Footing with Infill Slab: This method involves using strip footings around the perimeter of the house and sometimes under load-bearing walls. The area within these footings is then filled with a concrete slab. This type is beneficial for slopings sites.

4. Suspended Slab: These are generally used for garages on sloping sites with associated strip footing. In multi-story residential buildings, suspended slabs are commonly used for the floors between levels. Suspended slabs are often used for tilted decks and verandahs.

Each type has specific uses depending on factors like soil conditions, cost, and structural requirements.
